Constitution of the United States
Washington firmly believed in a democratic republic and like many others, thought the country needed stronger laws to keep the states together. In 1787, the founding fathers got together and wrote the U.S. Constitution, which was later ratified by all 13 states.
At the end of the American Revolution, Washington was probably the most admired and most trusted man in America. He was elected by the House of Representatives to be the first President of the United States. In one of Washington's most famous letters, written shortly before his inauguration, he expresses his apprehension at assuming the presidency:

He was elected by the House of Representatives to be the first President of the United States. In one of Washington's most famous letters, written shortly before his inauguration, he expresses his apprehension at assuming the presidency:
”...my movements to the chair of Government will be accompanied with feelings not unlike those of a culprit who is going to the place of his execution: So unwilling am I, in the evening of a life nearly consumed in public cares, to quit a peaceful abode for an Ocean of difficulties,
without that competency of political skill- abilities & inclination which is necessary to manage the helm...” --- George Washington

The Father of Our Country,
George Washington
In the two terms George Washington served as President, he set precedents that were followed by those after him. He shaped the Federal Government, created the 'presidential cabinet' filling it with the most talented people of the time, and established a National Banking system. He built a 'southern' Capital in what is now known as Washington D.C., put down the Whiskey Rebellion, and kept the nation out of the British/French war by remaining completely neutral. He signed treaties with the Indians, managed the nation's growth and helped to make the nation financially prosperous.
George Washington choose not to run for a third term, another precedent followed by those who succeeded him. He happily retired to Mount Vernon where he lived until his death in 1799.
